i just did something that was really fun but also made me feel like a little kid: i rode my bike, helmet and everything, even though it is supposed to be 95 today, to the library. the library is not very far away but it was still a little harrowing because a) i barely ever ride a bike, although i want to a lot more, b) the side street i took back home had no turnoffs and forced me to travel on the very busy, very scary grand boulevard, and c) because we don't have a bike lock so i spent the whole time in the library hoping the bike would still be there when i left. but all of that was ok.
i went to the library to find some classic books to read. there are quite a few "must reads" that i have never read, so those are the types of things i was looking for. huckleberry finn, madame bovary, vanity fair, etc. but the selection at the library was kind of disappointing. the only copy of huck finn i could find was GINORMOUS and hardback and not very portable either for the bike or the bus every day to work. and lots of things just weren't there at all. i hate hate hate jane austen books, but i know people love her so i was going to give her another try, but the only two books they had were pride and prejudice and sense and sensibility, both of which i have read already. the only book they had by any of the bronte sisters was wuthering heights, which i own. the only fitzgerald book they had was the great gatsby, which i also own. etc. i should have come prepared with a list of books to look for. next time i will. today i got oliver twist, which i hope i will like. i almost got the pickwick papers only because they talk about them in book 3 of the anne of green gables series, anne of the island. but oliver twist seemed like more of a must read. who knows though...but i want to read A LOT this summer. in my backyard with a DP soda by my side.
question: what are your favorite "classic" books? i accept both classics in the traditional sense and also modern day classics. the classics of the future. the classics of the space age.

ooh fun! Good question. I am supposed to be in the shower getting ready for church right now but I would rather do this. Here are some favorite classics:
1. The Brothers Karamazov - Dosteovsky
2. Les Miserables - Hugo
3. Little Women
4. Gone with the Wind
5. I will go ahead and say the Lord of the Rings even though I haven't finished all 3...but I will some day!
6. Franny and Zooey
7. any CS Lewis book or essay I've ever read
8. I liked Brave New World and 1984 but it's been a long time since I've read them
9. The Road Less Traveled- I think that is a modern classic. Al Gore referenced it once in a speech
10. ok I will say the Harry Potter books because they are future classics
I have not read nearly enough classics but would really like to also. Yesterday I read 2 out of 9 stories by Salinger. And I really liked them. I want to read on my front porch with an iced tea at my side.
Well Happy Reading! Maybe we could have our own tiny book club if we want to read the same book sometime this summer?
yes, i would definitely do that. i have read some of the books on your list but not the brothers karamazov or the road less traveled. but there are lots and lots of others i know i've missed out on too. i think i'm going to find a list of classics that everyone must read to be a good person and start looking for those. maybe we can pick one we both haven't read??
right now i'm reading "the fountainhead" by ayn rand, and it's very thought-provoking and extremely well-written. i would recommend it because i think it is an important book, although i don't agree with some of her ideas.
other classics i love are "of mice and men," "to kill a mockingbird," "till we have faces," "mere christianity," "catcher in the rye." you've probably read most of those...
there are so many books i love and so many that i want to read! i wish i could just sit and read for the rest of my life.
I totally forgot about your blog for like, two weeks sarah! And now I want to leave a comment but I feel stupid because it's now 17 days later. Oh well. I will post anyways, because I know it is very important to you to hear what my favorite classic books are. I believe my favorites are To Kill a Mockingird (thank you Christy for reminding me), Huckleberry Finn, and King Solomon's Mines. I'm not sure if that last one would be considered a classic, but it's old, and it was on some list to read in high school, so I will count it.
Remember the summer when we lived together in bellingham and were interns? I feel like all I did that summer was read, either on the front porch or in the backyard. That was great. I read all the Narnia books for the first time. I didn't want to read them because I thought they were too weird for me, but Autumn convinced me to try. Thanks Autumn!
thank you for all of your comments, everyone. i have read quite a few of your favorites but there are some i would like to try. i have only read anthem by ayn rand, but that was a long time ago and i would be interested in reading the fountainhead. i already talked about autumn's favorite classics. brad just bought me a copy of huckleberry finn and tom sawyer, so i am excited to read those.
danyeal, since i have not written another blog post in 17 days i think you have nothing to feel stupid about. i'm the one who should feel stupid because i am so lazy with the blogging. and anyway i love reading comments at any time.
i remember that summer when we were interns very well but i don't think i spent as much time reading as you. maybe i did? reading isn't what i remember most but i LOVE summers in bellingham. but the summer you described below is the one i plan on having. except without narnia.
